Austin Partners in Education

The Austin Chamber of Commerce and Austin ISD created Austin Partners in Education (APIE) in 1985. A primary function is to recruit and commit volunteers to tutor high school juniors and seniors deemed not yet college ready. APIE staff and over 120 volunteers provide weekly academic “classroom coaching” to non-college ready students, seniors who passed the TAKS but are still not academically prepared for college. Volunteers help students, divided into small study groups, with writing, English language arts or mathematics. This program currently focuses on Title 1 schools and students from under-resourced communities. As support for the program increases, more schools and communities can be helped.

APIE served 780 seniors in their College Readiness program during the 2007-08 school year. 223 of those seniors were deemed college ready by the end of the year. During the 2008-09 school year APIE served 890 students, resulting in 320 new college ready seniors. APIE’s goal is to increase the number of college ready students by 15% each year. APIE is currently serving 1147 seniors in the 2009-10 school year. So far, 189 have been deemed college ready.
